Harnessing the Power of Diffusion

Diffusion is the spontaneous movement of molecules or other particles in solution due to their random thermal motion, which will ultimately reach a uniform concentration throughout the solvent – a process requiring no addition of energy to the system.

Diffusion is difficult to harness on a large, macro scale due to surrounding "noise" in the environment. At the microfluidics level, however, the control of diffusion is possible – and powerful. Micronics' solution is to utilize the properties of laminar flow, which maintains a boundary between fluids, while molecules within the fluid migrate across the boundary where they can react to produce a measurable response. This allows rapid analysis of molecular components that, on the macro level, would require advance sample preparation, including centrifugation, of the components to be analyzed.
